Asphalt Repair & Patching

Potholes, sunken sections and failed patches. We cut back to solid material so it does not sink again next spring.

What's involved

How we do it

Most failed patches fail because someone filled over a soft spot. If the base underneath has gone, filling the hole just buys a season. We cut back to something solid and rebuild from there.

  • Failed area saw-cut square, not feathered at the edges.
  • Bad base dug out and replaced, not paved over.
  • Compacted in lifts and tied into the surrounding surface.
  • Honest answer if the whole slab is past repair.

Asphalt Repair & Patching questions

Can you patch it, or does the whole driveway need replacing?

Depends on what failed. If the base is still solid and the damage is surface cracking or a few bad spots, patching costs a fraction of a replacement and will hold. If the base has gone soft — you will often feel it flex under a car — a patch buys you a year at most. We will walk it with you and tell you honestly which one you have.

Why do patches keep sinking?

Because whoever did them filled over a soft spot instead of digging it out. Asphalt is only as stable as what is under it. We saw-cut the failed area square, dig out the bad base, replace and compact it, then tie the patch into the surrounding surface.

How long does a repair take?

Most residential patching is a same-day job and you can usually drive on it within 24 hours. Larger commercial repairs depend on how much base has to come out, and we will give you that timeline in writing with the estimate.

What is the difference between a surface patch and a full-depth patch?

A surface patch replaces the top layer only and suits damage that has not reached the base. A full-depth patch goes all the way down, replaces the failed aggregate and rebuilds from the bottom. Surface patching a full-depth problem is the single most common reason a repair sinks again.

Can you fix a pothole in the winter?

We can put cold patch in as a stopgap to stop it getting worse and to keep it from wrecking tires, but it is temporary by design. A permanent repair needs hot mix and temperatures above about 50°F, so we book it for spring and do not charge you twice.

Water pools in one spot after it rains — can that be fixed?

Yes. A birdbath is a grading problem, and standing water is how the next failure starts. Depending on how deep it is we either mill and re-lay that section to restore fall, or build it up as part of a wider resurface. Patching over it without correcting the grade just moves the puddle.

Will the repair match the rest of the driveway?

Not at first. New asphalt is noticeably darker than weathered asphalt and takes a season or two to blend. A sealcoat over the whole surface afterwards is what actually evens the color out, and it is worth doing once the patch has cured.

The edges are crumbling away — is that repairable?

Usually. Edges break down because there is nothing supporting them sideways. We cut the ragged edge back to sound material, replace it, and shoulder it with compacted material so the new edge has something to lean against instead of failing the same way.
